December is when Saint Lucia slips into her busiest and most festive season. The days stay warm, drier weather begins to settle in, and Castries glows with lanterns ahead of National Day. Yachts that have crossed the Atlantic sail into Rodney Bay, while families and couples arrive for Christmas in the sun. Saint Lucia in December brings beach weather, a full calendar of celebrations and the island at her most lively.
What is the weather like in December?
December marks the turn from the rainy season, which runs from June to December, to the drier months that last until April. Expect warm, sunny days within the island’s year-round range of about 23 to 31°C, softened by trade winds along the coast. Short showers still pass through, especially over the rainforest, and usually clear quickly, leaving the beaches and the sea ready for swimming, snorkelling and sailing. See how each season compares across the year.
The Festival of Lights and National Day
Saint Lucia takes her name from Saint Lucy, and the saint’s feast day, 13 December, is the island’s National Day. Celebrations build through early December with a lantern-making competition.
On the evening of 12 December, the Festival of Lights and Renewal fills Castries. Handmade lanterns parade through the streets, Christmas songs and dance follow, the lights come on in Derek Walcott Square and fireworks rise over the city. In 2026, National Day falls on a Sunday, with the public holiday observed on Monday 14 December.
The ARC fleet arrives in Rodney Bay
The Atlantic Rally for Cruisers leaves Gran Canaria on 22 November 2026, with around 150 boats bound for Saint Lucia. After 18 to 21 days at sea, crews begin arriving at Rodney Bay Marina in December to a festive welcome. The rally closes with its prize-giving on 19 December.
Christmas on the island
As Christmas approaches, carols and seasonal lights spread through towns and villages, and resorts mark the season with their own festive programmes. Every Friday, the street party in Gros Islet keeps the north of the island dancing into the night.
Planning a December trip
December to April is Saint Lucia’s busiest season, so book flights and accommodation early, especially around Christmas and New Year. British Airways now flies daily and direct from London Gatwick, and direct flights also connect the island with several cities in the United States and Canada. Before you fly, check the entry requirements and complete the electronic entry form.
